"Oak Tree III Pence" Update !
« on: September 22, 2012, 01:26:44 PM »

I really don't know where to start I am so excited about my find yesterday evening . I had recently visited musketball beach where in the past I had found a couple of  late 17th  early 18th century relics . The last hunt there  I only came up with a couple of straggler musket balls    (" thats over 80 from this site now " ) and little else . I was feeling  I had a chance to   get lucky at this site and pop a coin from that period but it never happened. I knew I had to move on to new territory and last night I did. A new beach area I just started to explore on Casco Bay. It was a 10:00 pm low  tide so I was in no hurry after work Yesterday. I headed out of the house around 7:00pm figuring I could poke around on the bank for a little bit and see if any thing turns up. This is where the brass scissor/ wick trimmer ??   type tool was found . With all the excitement I have not had time to research this item yet . The only other find from the bank was the medium sized  buckle .    Headed down to the beach area around 8:30 and started to find scattered signals but enough to keep it interesting. I had only found a bit of clad and a couple buttons one brass and one pewter , an old school  lead plug , a couple of leads balls and a few other relic do dads when I left at about 11:45 I was a little disappointed with the area. I had not even found a wheat penny, Or so I thought .  The first picture posted shows all my finds Photographed  last night before I cleaned them and discovered I had indeed found an old coin . I had no clue what was in store for me upon cleaning . I remember finding the III pence  on the beach . My first thought was that it was just the bottom disc of a shotgun shell.  . You find some of these in the salt . When I picked it up I could feel the rim on the back where it had been pierced but I figured it was a piece of button shank So I wrote it off as a worn flat button of some type and threw it into my finds bag . . When I brought my finds in my wife asked me how I did and I said nothing except one curious tool relic . I rechecked all the coins an confirmed I had not found a keeper coin . then I picked up the flat button and just ran it under some warm tap water . I noticed some writing and started to think I might get a backmark I.D.  I put it under my loop for a close exam and thought this is not a button but a coin of some type , Then I read the New England on the coin and the realization of what I found hit me with a big adrenaline rush . I started yelling and screaming to my wife come see this !  Come see this. ! I was up till 2:30 Am with the adrenaline spike so I am a little tired today but happy and content for a while     Sealouse

Thanks Blazer ! It's what they did back then so they could string them . I know it detracts from the value of the coin but the hole does add a personal touch from the previous owner of  the coin . I think I will keep it  :LMAO:
Now that's something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!

I have heard good things about you from Goldbill   And you are posting some nice finds ! It's a crazy hobby ! You have no idea what you are going to dig up next . H. H.   Sealouse

Nice find there louse  If I could offer an opinion on it? It's possible that it was used as a tax due/payment back in it's day. Thinking like it may have been nailed to a barrel of something that was imported   :dontknow:
